The song is not actually the 2001:Space Oddesey theme song, it's the intro to Richard Strauss' "Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30." Kubrick used the song in his movie, but did not commission the piece. It was already an established "Tone Poem." In fact, none of the music in 2001 was written for the film. Kubrick initially hired a composer, but opted instead to use classical music for the film.
